Unique Vintage Finds...
....and the stories involved ♥
Hi!
I’m delighted you stopped by! I’m a long time thrifter, antique shopper and collector of a variety of rusty stuff and pearl handled silverware. Quite the contrast but, as you get to know me, it may explain a lot. I do not profess to be a writer, in fact, my dear friends Debby and Susan are amazing writers and filled with wit. I hope to channel some of their energy as I compose these posts along the way. I just love what I do and I want to share with those who are equally filled with curiosity about found and previously loved objects. I think our land has way too much trash and we have so many exquisite and fascinating treasures to be shared, used, and re-purposed among us. Please indulge me as I catch you up to speed on who I am and what Daisy Maude is all about. My name is Laura, Laura Maude. I have a fabulous daughter, Erika, whose middle name is also Maude. We come from a long line of feisty, independent and interesting Mauds. (Our two newest generations got the “e”.) Our favourite flower is the quintessentially lovely daisy. Hence, Daisy Maude. Natch, as my dear Dad would say! We started the business together three years ago, but it’s had a slow start. After spontaneously leaving a 20+ year sales career, I went back to school to be a social worker. When we started the business I had yet to be accepted to do my Masters, the final stretch of this new venture,. Much to my surprise, I was accepted to a wonderful university and headed off, abandoning my family (they don’t necessarily agree) for a year to stress out (they do concur here) and fall head over heels with the profession. Erika and I did a fun pop-up show called 613Flea♥ here in Ottawa, in the fall of that year. It was a huge hit and we loved every minute of it. But we suspended everything until I returned from Montréal because it was all too much. We had secured all the foundations for the business with logo, cards, signage, website domain name etc…. When I got back, our plan was to reignite! But, as the universe would have it, Erika also decided to change career directions and was accepted into a social work program last fall! Go figure! As I waited for my degree to be conferred and to distract me from flubbing interviews, I rebooted Daisy Maude and did another 613Flea♥ show at Christmas. Another, even greater success. This time Erika was studying away and I enlisted the effervescent support of the lovely Susan. Again, the universe was hugging Daisy Maude and saying, GROOVY!!! So, here I am. And here is my confession. I am applying for jobs as a Social Worker and not getting interviews. I wonder if I am not enough and then I remember Brené Brown and know I am enough. It may not be my time for that right now. I genuinely know, from years of therapy and education, that rather than being bogged down by negativity, mostly by my own internal and relentless chatter, I need to engage in uplifting and inspiring activity. And Daisy Maude is it. I love finding treasures, and as much as my partner may say otherwise, I really don’t want to keep them! I want to interpret and get to know the story behind the pieces and share that with others. I hope to tie a social initiative into our business, but more of this in another post. In the meantime, that wonderful universe really is saying, “make a go of this, girl!” So I am. I am excited to share my escapades, discoveries and especially the history behind these fantastic finds. We are selling on line, merchandising in stores (see the beautifully curated kitchenware boutique, Pot &Pantry, located in Ottawa’s Upper Elgin shopping district) and we even source specifically requested vintage and antique product. I’d love to hear about what you are looking for, and what interests you. I’m hoping someone is reading this. Hello? But if not, it will be my testament, my grounding. We are booked for another 613Flea♥ show May 6, 2017, at the historic Aberdeen Pavilion in Lansdowne Park, Ottawa. It will be a fun summer celebration kick off for me, for Canada’s sesquicentennial. We have some wonderful vintage finds from 1967, and other Canadiana, you may want to incorporate into your own party planning! But, I’m getting ahead of myself. So there you have it. We are just getting started, Check us out on Instagram and at our Etsy store, both named Daisy Maude. And....thanks for reading to the end! Until next time….. Laura
